A Salute to Black Queer Podcasters
Happy Pride!
Now more than ever, I feel the need to cloak myself in the blackest beauty and the most queer-centric positivity to shield my soul from a world full of hatred towards me because of who I am.
Suffering a slow, painful death by a thousand microaggressions is the plight of most black queer folk every day … for doing something as simple as walking down the street.
And mama loves to walk. It is healthy, it is a welcome reprieve from our cubicle of an apartment and it is the best time to listen to my favorite black queer podcasts: “The Read,” “The Friend Zone” and “Why Won’t You Date Me?!”
These black queer podcasts feature black queer folk who speak their truth in the most poignant, transparent and relatable ways. They are a manifestation of all of the excellence our community espouses and all of the pain we feel. They are me … I see my reflection in them and I salute them for being pioneers in the podcasting space!
The Read features Kid Fury and Crissle, two black queer friends trying to make it in the entertainment industry and dealing with all of the drama of New York City. In a word, their podcast is simply brilliant. Their nonchalant and irreverent take on pop culture is counterbalanced with a fiery “read” aimed at whatever unfortunate soul managed to piss them off that week. They are black royalty particularly amongst black youth and their podcast should not be missed!
The friend zone features Asante, Dustin Ross and Francheska (also known as “Hey Fran, Hey”), three friends who initially met each other via social media and have turned their love for each other and mental wellness into a top rated podcast. This quirky bunch takes the time to love up on each other for the world to see and feel, showing us through their love that we too can and should love ourselves. This weekly show is a beacon of positivity for our community!
Finally, please enter the hilarious Nicole Beyer of “Nailed It! fame. Her incredibly raunchy yet touching podcast is a transparent introspection into the trials and tribulations of internet dating for people exist outside of the standard notions of beauty. Not to be confined to this one topic, Nicole has used her platform to talk about a whole host of interesting, relevant issues including mental health, loving yourself as you are and having sex with strangers. Her most recent special guests, in honor of pride month, have included a veritable “who’s who” amongst drag royalty including Monet Exchange, Jinxx Monsoon and Eureka O’Hara. If you are easily offended by potty language, this one might not be for you but she is both a treat and a dream.
And finally … there’s little old me and my best friend of “the family we choose” podcast. I believe I can speak for both of us when I say just how overwhelmed we are by the positive response to our podcast. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support!
For those who haven’t check it out yet … well … there’s no time like the present!
Peace and love to you all,
The Trendy One
