There’s no such thing as a “Staycation”

Hey y’all,

Bae and I decided to leave our house and go to the other side of the island for a few days because I could not ignore my work phone - a mobile tether to Dante’s 9th circle from which I so desperately sought reprieve.

Ms. Rona would have you believing that a staycation is possible - and I certainly tried to make it work. I baked a loaf of bread, I cooked dinner and I tidied up the house.

But no matter how hard I tried, I could not put down the phone to the utter chagrin of my better half.

So we packed an overnight bag and drove two hours (a grand total of 30 kilometers) through the picturesque albeit precariously windy ocean road to Tarrafal where we had a suite waiting for us at the Kingfisher Village hotel.

It wasn’t the grand European vacation I envisioned, but the very warm reception, beautiful room with stunning views of the ocean and the obligatory welcome bottle of wine all but made me forget my former vacation plans.

Not only is everyone friendly, but the food is divine. Our room came with breakfast, and the hotel also offered lunch and dinner. Bae being a proper English lad, we both opted for the fish and chips with homemade remoulade and hand cut chips. We promptly paired the meal for kings with our long drink of choice - a gin and tonic - and finally relaxed.

We then lounged in our new seaside abode as we awaited the next meal time for which the chef prepared a tuna tartar and rainbow runner filet over mashed potatoes.

The next morning, we ate a quick breakfast then walked to the pristine white beach in town where a neighborhood dog befriended us. We made our way to the market and found a place to get hand made sandals and clothes, and told ourselves we would be back with slightly smaller measurements lol! A fishermen then greeted us outside of our hotel (it pulled up to the side of the hotel) and took us on an hour long journey to the light house.

Not to be outdone, the evenings chef prepared Asian-fusion cuisine complete with bao buns and coconut ice cream.

Alas, it’s time to go home, but I would be remiss if I didn’t highly recommend the Kingfisher Village!
